If there’s one type of meal I recommend time and time again to my clients, it’s a nourish bowl.
Not only are they colourful, satisfying and incredibly easy to customise, but they also make it simple to include many of the nutrients your body needs to feel its best.
When it comes to gut health, variety is key. Your gut is home to trillions of bacteria, and these little microbes play an important role in digestion, immunity, inflammation, energy levels and even mood. One of the best ways to support a healthy gut microbiome is by eating a wide variety of whole foods.
This is why nourish bowls are such a great option.
As a nutrition coach for women, I love helping clients create meals that aren’t about restriction or following the latest food trend, but instead focus on nourishing the body, supporting health and making healthy eating feel simple.
What Is a Nourish Bowl?
A nourish bowl is essentially a balanced meal made up of different food groups, combined together in one delicious bowl.
The beauty of them is that there isn’t one “perfect” recipe. You can change them depending on your goals, your preferences, what’s in season and what you actually enjoy eating.
My ideal nourish bowl usually includes:
- Leafy greens
- A good source of protein
- Plenty of colourful vegetables and fruit
- Wholegrain carbohydrates
- A healthy source of fats
Together, these ingredients create a meal that’s packed with fibre, vitamins, minerals and nutrients to support your gut, hormones, energy levels and overall wellbeing.
Leafy Greens: Feeding Your Gut Bacteria
Leafy greens such as spinach, rocket, kale, lettuce and herbs are a fantastic addition to any nourish bowl.
They are packed with vitamins, minerals and fibre, which are essential for keeping your digestive system healthy.
The fibre found in leafy greens acts as a food source for the beneficial bacteria living in your gut. These bacteria help break down fibre and produce compounds that support the health of your gut lining.
Leafy greens are also rich in nutrients like magnesium, vitamin K and folate, which all contribute to overall health and wellbeing.
Adding a handful of greens to your meals is one of the easiest ways to increase your vegetable intake without much effort.
Protein: Supporting Your Body From the Inside Out
Protein is an essential part of every balanced meal, and it’s especially important for women looking to build strength, support hormones, manage hunger and maintain muscle.
Good protein options for nourish bowls include chicken, salmon, eggs, tofu, beans, lentils, prawns, Greek yoghurt-based dressings or other plant-based options.
Protein helps keep you feeling fuller for longer, supports muscle repair after training and provides the building blocks your body needs for countless processes.
For my clients who are strength training, prioritising protein is a key part of supporting their goals.
Colourful Vegetables and Fruit: Variety Is Key
One of my favourite things about nourish bowls is how colourful they can be.
Think roasted peppers, carrots, beetroot, tomatoes, cucumber, broccoli, avocado, berries or pomegranate seeds.
Eating a variety of different coloured fruits and vegetables means you’re providing your body with a wider range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Different plant foods contain different types of fibre and beneficial compounds, which is why “eating the rainbow” is such a helpful approach for gut health.
The more variety you can include in your diet, the more variety you can support within your gut microbiome.
Grains: Giving Your Body Energy
Carbohydrates often get a bad reputation, but they are an important part of a balanced diet.
Wholegrain carbohydrates such as quinoa, brown rice, couscous, bulgur wheat, oats or wholegrain pasta provide energy, fibre and important nutrients.
For women who train regularly, carbohydrates are especially valuable as they help fuel workouts and support recovery.
Including carbohydrates in your nourish bowl can help you feel energised, satisfied and less likely to experience cravings later in the day.
Healthy Fats: Supporting Hormones and Absorption
A balanced nourish bowl wouldn’t be complete without a source of healthy fats.
Foods such as avocado, olive oil, nuts, seeds, tahini and oily fish provide essential fatty acids that support many areas of health.
Healthy fats are important for hormone production, brain health and helping your body absorb fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E and K.
They also add flavour and satisfaction to your meals, helping you create something that feels enjoyable rather than like a “diet meal”.
Nourish Bowls Make Healthy Eating Easier
One of the biggest reasons I love nourish bowls is because they remove the pressure of making “perfect” meals.
You don’t need complicated recipes or hours in the kitchen. You can simply combine foods that support your goals and create something delicious.
They are also a great way to use up ingredients you already have. Leftover vegetables, cooked grains, protein from dinner the night before and a simple homemade dressing can quickly become a nutritious meal.
Healthy eating doesn’t need to be complicated.
